Coy Gibbs, 49, passed away in his sleep overnight. He was a co-owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, the son of Pro Football and NASCAR Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs, and the father of newly crowned NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs.
Who was Coy Gibbs?
Gibbs, who served as Joe Gibbs Racing’s COO and vice chairman, had a life that included playing linebacker for Stanford University, competing in NASCAR for four seasons from 2000 to 2003, and working for his father’s Washington Commanders organisation for a number of years as an offensive quality control assistant.

After sharing a Joe Gibbs Racing truck with his brother J.D. in 2000, Gibbs started competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on a part-time basis. He then switched to full-time truck racing for the following two seasons.
With the highest career performance of second at Texas in 2002, Gibbs recorded six top-five finishes and 21 top-10 finishes in just two seasons. Before switching to the NASCAR Busch Series in 2003, Gibbs finished 10th in points in both seasons. He achieved two top-10 finishes, with his best coming at Talladega.
After the 2003 season, Gibbs gave up the wheel to join his father on the coaching staff of Washington, where he worked as an offensive quality control assistant from 2004 through 2007. Along with managing the family race team’s motocross squad, Gibbs later rose to the position of COO and co-owner.
Reasons behind the Coy Gibbs’s Death
J.D. Gibbs, Joe Gibbs’ other son, passed away in 2019. He passed away after a protracted fight with a degenerative neurological condition, also at the age of 49.
Coy Gibb passed away mere hours after his 20-year-old son, Ty Gibbs, won the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship race; the cause of death has not been revealed.
In addition to his wife Heather, Gibbs is survived by his four children, including his 20-year-old son Ty, who on Saturday night won the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship.
As the driver of the No. 23 Toyota for 23XI Racing, Gibbs was initially scheduled to start 10th in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series season finale. Before the race, there was a moment of silence in memory of his father.
