Recent media reports have unveiled the development of an underwater-launched kamikaze drone by a Chinese university, sparking significant interest and concern among defense analysts worldwide.

Emerging Threat: China’s Underwater Launch Kamikaze Drone for Future Pacific Operations

China is reportedly developing a new weapon, a kamikaze drone, that can be launched from underwater. This weapon is expected to be used against adversaries in the Pacific Ocean region, including the United States (US) and Taiwan.

The ability to launch the drone underwater makes it particularly useful for China in a potential invasion of Taiwan.

Tensions have been high between China, Taiwan, and the US in the Taiwan Strait. China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has conducted military exercises near Taiwan in preparation for a possible invasion. The US, Japan, and NATO have also been increasingly involved in the region.

One of the challenges for the PLA in an amphibious operation is the involvement of US military advisors who provide operational management and technical intelligence to Taiwan.

Having a small tactical infantry support system like a loitering munition, in addition to other capital platforms such as amphibious tanks, landing helicopter docks, and attack helicopters, would greatly benefit China in breaching the dense coastal and inland defenses of Taiwan.

The ROC army has established barriers on the beach that PLA soldiers must overcome, requiring significant resources. Although the defending Taiwanese forces will eventually be defeated, the battle is likely to be extremely difficult given China’s equipment and personnel advantage.

Using kamikaze drones to attack the defenders would provide additional precise firepower. These drones can disorient or demolish the defenders’ positions, enabling the attacker to advance effectively.
