The News: In connection with the more than 26-year-old disappearance of Cal Poly student Kristin Smart, a jury on Tuesday found Paul Flores guilty of first-degree murder.
First-degree murder was deemed to be Paul Flores’s guilt by the jury. His father, Ruben Flores, was accused of being an accessory to murder after the fact, but the jury in a separate trial found him not guilty of the crime.
He was charged with assisting in the cover-up of Smart’s body. The contradicting verdicts were announced in the same courtroom seconds apart.

The reaction of Paul Flores during the Verdict
When the verdict of guilt was announced, Paul Flores did not respond. He was seated behind his father, who didn’t respond to the decision either.
There were also several members of Kristin’s family present in the courtroom. After the verdict was pronounced, her mother and sister sobbed for a while. The father and brother of Kristin seemed relieved.
On the morning of April 13, 2021, Paul Flores and his father Ruben were both detained in relation to the disappearance of Kristin Smart in May 1996.
Charges against Paul Flores and his father Ruben Flores
First-degree murder charges were brought against Paul Flores, 45. Authorities claimed he attempted to rape the 19-year-old Cal Poly freshman before killing her. According to witnesses, Kristin Smart was last seen with Paul Flores before she vanished.
81-year-old Ruben Flores was charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly aiding in the crime’s cover-up. Shortly after his arrest, he secured a $50,000 bond and was out of jail. Bail was rejected, therefore Paul stayed in arrest.
The defence contended that the case was simple and there was no evidence of a murder, but the prosecution said during closing arguments that the evidence was convincing and revealed Kristin Smart was dead and was killed by Paul Flores.
Although Kristin’s body has never been located, in 2002 her legal death was certified. On December 9, Paul Flores is scheduled to get his punishment. He might receive a 25-year to a life sentence in prison.
